The International Committee of the Red Cross(ICRC) is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. The organization takes action in response to emergencies and at the same time promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law.
Earlier today, the spokesman to President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu in a statement on the 21 Chibok girls who were released earlier today said the International Red Cross played a role in the negotiation. According to Shehu,”The release of the girls, in a limited number is the outcome of negotiations between the administration and the Boko Haram brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government. The negotiations will continue.”
The ICRC in two tweets via its verified Twitter handle confirmed this saying,”Today we transferred 21 of the #Chibokgirls and handed them to the #Nigeria government authorities, acting as a neutral intermediary. We cannot provide any further comment at this stage in the best interest of the girls concerned #Chibokgirls #Nigeria.”
