The abductor of two toddlers declared missing in Kaduna since January and March this year, Abubakar Adamu has confessed that he abducted the kids because he likes them and wanted to keep them as his children. The abducted toddlers, five years old Zainab Umar also known as Sultana whose father is a lecturer with Kaduna Polytechnic got missing while returning from school at Ungwar Sanusi in the month of March while Nasiruddeen Mahmud, son of an orderly of former Vice President, Namadi Sambo got missing in January and had already been renamed Ibrahim by the same abductor.
Abubakar, an indigene of Adamawa state who was paraded alongside his wife yesterday at the Kaduna State Police Command said, “I like them that was why I took them. They have been living with me since I took them because my nine years marriage has been fruitless. When we went to the hospital, they said she has fibroid, she was treated, yet, we have not been able to have a child of our own. They are not my children but I like them, I know I have a fault because I do not know their parents, I just saw them on the road and picked them up. They have been with me for about seven and nine months respectively,”
“If you are desperately looking for something and get frustrated, you can do anything to help yourself and that was it. This is my first time of taking a child and i regret my action.I had wanted to go to Saudi Arabia, I felt they might allow small children to travel with their parents, unfortunately, they said they cannot give them visa. So I just forgot about it. I like the children and i treat them like mine own, i sent them to school and i even when i traveled out of the country, I bought them expensive toys to play with,” he confessed.
When asked what his occupation was, he said, “I do business, I do trading, I buy clothes, shoes and Indian dresses from Dubai.” On her part, Mrs. Fatima Abubakar, the abductor’s wife denied knowledge of where the kids came from; saying that her husband told her that he brought them from an orphanage home. “I had always told him to let us go to an orphanage home to adopt at least a child since we have none but we had not gone when he came with Nassirudeen and later Zainab. I took care of them as if they were my children and we even enrolled them in a very good school because we wanted to give them good lives. I never knew he abducted them,” she wept.
While the abductors were weeping, missing the kids and regretting their actions, parents and relatives of the abducted kids were seen rejoicing having re-united with their son and daughter. Zainab’s mother, Maryam Umar demanded justice from government on the matter, saying such people should not be spared so that they don’t continue to perpetrate the evil act. Also, Nasirudeen’s father, Mahmud urged parents especially mothers to watch over their children and never allow the little ones go out without an adult. He appealed to the state government to ensure that justice is done.
According to the Kaduna State Police Command Spokesman, Aliyu Usman, the toddlers were recovered in the hands of Abubakar Adamu and his wife Fatima Abubakar at Ungwar Shekara in Malali, Kaduna. “Subsequent investigation was conducted and we discovered that Sultana was not the only child abducted by the couple. There was another child named Nasiruddeen Mahmud who was renamed Ibrahim by the abductors. They have both been re-united with their families while investigation into the matter continues,” he said. He also mentioned that the special anti-kidnapping unit of the command arrested three suspects named Mohammed Tukur, Haruna Ibrahim and Malali Sani in connection with criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery and homicide.
