Members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been at loggerheads with the Federal Government over their payment system. The Union have been on a 10-month strike and meeting with the federal government has been ending in a deadlock. However, the Federal Government has began the registration process of a rival union. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, made this known on Thursday in Abuja. The National Coordinator and members of Congress of University Academics, CONUA, Niyi Sunmonu had paid the Minister a courtesy visit. CONUA’s membership is drawn from university lecturers opposed to ASUU. “We are receiving you in audience formally today in this ministry. We have the right to receive associations of persons that are workers, whether we have registered them or not, just as you have the right to apply for registration which is the lawful thing to do”, Ngige said. “We have the right to receive and hold meetings with you. The journey to have you registered has just started”, he added.
