The Nasarawa State Governor Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has commended former military head of state late General Sani Abacha for approving the creation of Nasarawa state and five others in 1996. Delivering the Independence Day speech to commemorate Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day and 20th year anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa state at the Lafia Square, Al-Makura said, “The agitation for the creation of this state started in 1980 in the second republic.
“But in 1996, the government of Late General Abacha of blessed memory constituted committee on state and local government creation and boundary adjustments. On 1st of october 1996, the golden day of Nasarawa history, our beloved Abacha announced the creation of Nasarawa state along with five other states. Let me use this opportunity to posthumously thank General Abacha for the creation of Nasarawa state. He gave us the pride of self determination and a state we can call our own. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Let me also praise our founding fathers who played key roles for the actualization of the creation of Nasarawa state”.
