Former Military Governor of Kaduna State and Minister of Communications, General Tanko Ayuba (rtd.) died yesterday of an undisclosed ailment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos. Though details of his death are still sketchy, there are reports that prior to his death, Ayuba had been on admission at a private hospital for about two months. Described as an ex-officer, a gentleman and a politician of high morals, Ayuba – who was born June 12, 1945, and hailed from Kebbi State – was appointed Governor of Kaduna State in August 1990 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. In April 2007, he was elected Senator for Kebbi South constituency on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He also served on the committees on Science & Technology, Police Affairs, Navy, National Planning, Integration and Cooperation, Defence and Army, and Communication. In September 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Nelson Mandela Gold Award for his excellent leadership and contributions to society.
