Zamfara in the last 7 days recorded less bloodshed compared to the previous week, but the rate of abductions of persons remains the same. There’s however, something to worry about: an emerging evidence of the presence of Ansaru in #Zamfara, operating across the states in North West #Nigeria right into the border with Niger Republic. #Ansaru is a sect, a breakaway faction of #BokoHaram in 2012.
They were responsible for the prison break in Abuja in 2012.So far, several armed bandits and cattle rustlers are being proselytized into the fold of the Jihadis while erring armed bandits are systematically being taken out by the #Ansaru elements. The Northwest may likely be the new jihadi battle ground in #Nigeria like the Northeast. According to sources, the population of the bandits and cattle rustlers outweigh that of the Jihadis, so they are more focused in consolidating their footholds at present and they are doing so quietly.
Over the week there were series of reports of kidnappings, even within the state capital, Gusau. One Khadija Ibrahim Ahmad was kidnapped in Tudun Wada, Gusau on Thursday, she regained her freedom on Sunday evening after ransom was paid like several others. Those that can afford it keep a substantial amount just in case. The majority of the victims, including security officials that were kidnapped ended up paying ransom amounting to millions of Naira to regain their freedom.Sources say there’s a likelihood that many of the communities that are under siege by bandits, cattle rustlers and terrorists may be disenfranchised.
There are reports of the abduction of #INEC Adhoc staff, especially between Gusau and Tsafe LGA.While #INEC is laying emphasis on the logistic problems across the country, in #Zamfara many of the Adhoc staff posted to villages outside of the major towns of Shinkafi, Zurmi, Anka, Maradun, Maru, Tsafe LGAs are scared to their bones, many said they will opt out of the job.Last Saturday, on the postponed election day some people caught with two sacks of guns in Gusau motor park were immediately burnt to death.
Security officials were helpless and unable to rescue the suspects from the angry mob. The people are tired and angry.Clues like where the suspects were coming from or where they were headed to ended in the fire used to set them ablaze. Yesterday night, Bandits/terrorists abducted five people in D/Gulbi Town of Maru LGA in #Zamfara. There were several other abductions across the state.
Earlier today a group of soldiers engaged the bandits/terrorists that were terrorising the Dansadau/Dangulbi axis of Zamfara State in one of their hideouts, killing scores. The military is trying, but the strategy doesn’t seem to halt the killings in the state. For most of the people in #Zamfara, life has lost its innocence and worth. No longer do people set out on a day’s routine and expect to see it to the end peacefully. Not even going to sleep is considered a natural need anymore. Every step is a grave risk.
