A reverend father (name withheld) of a Catholic Church in Abuja has been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl entrusted into his custody. Sources said the girl’s mother, who hails from the same state with the priest, had allowed the girl and her six-year-old brother to pass the night with the priest after the Feast of Assumption last Monday. A source said after the programme ended at about 5:00p.m., the mother and her children went to greet the priest, as they used to do. The source alleged: “They wanted to go home after they had greeted the priest but he asked her to leave the girl and her brother with him, saying his house was the house of God. He said that nothing would happen to them.”
The source said that the priest took them to his flat and the children slept in the same room. “He took the girl to another room in the midnight, saying she should not be sleeping in the same room with her brother and had carnal knowledge of her there,” the source said. The source said that when the mother discovered that something was wrong with her daughter, she took her to hospital where the doctors declined to treat her, saying that police needed to be involved in the matter and the case was reported at the Asokoro Police Station. When contacted, the FCT police spokesperson, ASP Anjuguri Manzah, said he would get back to our reporter but did not as at the time of filing the report.“You have to give me some time to make enquiry about that,” he said.
