An Islamic scholar, Abdulaziz Dauda, popularly known as Abdul Inyass, has been sentenced to death by an Upper Shari’ah Court in Kano for blasphemous statements against the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). According to the presiding judge, Alkali Muhammad Atiku, “This court has sentenced you, Abdulaziz Dauda also known as Abdul Inyass, to death by hanging for blasphemous statements against Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and three years jail term for inciting public disturbance”.
The judge has given 30-year-old Inyass 30 days to appeal the judgment. Inyass was sued by the state government on a two-count charge of blasphemy against the holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and for inciting public disturbance contrary to Section 275 of Kano State Shari’ah Penal Code Law 2000. Inyass delivered a lecture in the state on 13th May 2015 which caused a riot that led to the burning of a court at Rijar-Lemo quarters. Following the judgment, Inyass was flown to Abuja on Monday, 4th January 2016 with DSS officials amid tight security.
